Junaid H. Khan, M.D.
Dr. Khan is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery, cardiac surgery, and thoracic surgery at the University of California in San Francisco. Dr. Khan worked for two years in the research lab at UCSF. He specializes in adult cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery, including coronary artery bypass grafting and minimally invasive valve surgery. He has a particular interest in endoscopic mitral valve repair.

Russell D. Stanten, M.D.
Dr. Stanten attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. His internship and residency were completed at the University of California, Davis Medical Center. His fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery was served at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston Massachusetts. Dr. Stanten specializes in adult cardiac and thoracic surgery, including coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve replacement, heart valve repair, lung cancer, esophageal surgery, and minimally invasive valve surgery.

Barry Sheppard, M.D.
Dr. Sheppard received his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at Harbor-University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center, and served his thoracic surgery residency at the University of California Davis Medical Center. He is board-certified and a diplomate of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Sheppard has a particular interest in screening for lung cancer. He has been a Principal Investigator with the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program since 2002, an international consortium of hospitals that has pioneered the use of low-dose CT scans to detect early-stage lung cancer.
Physician assistants (PAs) work with the surgeons in our practice. PAs are mid-level health care practitioners who assist in the care before, during, and after surgery. This includes history and physicals, assisting in surgery, and managing aspects of care after surgery. The PAs in East Bay Cardiac Surgery Center are board-certified.
Lauren Hewett, MS, PA-C
Lauren is a nationally certified Physician Assistant specializing in Cardiothoracic surgery. She completed her Honors Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Delaware. She subsequently earned her Masters in Physician Assistant studies from Arcadia University in Pennsylvania. Lauren assists in both cardiac and thoracic surgeries, as well as collaboratively manages the care and treatment for pre- and post-operative patients.
Jessica Warner, MS, PA-C
Jessica is a nationally certified Physician Assistant also specializing in Cardiothoracic surgery. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Washington. She completed her Physician Assistant Masters degree at Samuel Merritt University here in Oakland. Jessica assists in cardiac and thoracic surgery, as well as peri-operative care of patients.
